After settling in england, planche decided to open a porcelain factory. He partnered with William Duesbury (a wealthy English merchant) and the two men began work on a factory in Derby. Derby is located on the River Derwent near Trent.

The first seven are signed J Price and have date ciphers for 1946-50. The Monsal Dale Waterfall version dated 1950 is initialled "D.E.K." and the Haddon Hall plate dated 1959 is signed by Brenda "Pip" Bentley. According to Twitchett and Bailey John Price joined Royal Crown Derby from Doulton as decorating Manager in 1945. (See 1947 Staff List).

The mark used on the porcelain at this time was the Derby Crown mark - above right - which was used from 1878-1890.. Royal Crown Derby purchased the King Street factory, and through the difficult years of the Second World War was required to produce largely utilitarian white wares, being subjected to stringent regulations as was the whole.

This version of Oliver Twist has the factory mark used 1954-65 and is therefore a much later re-issue of a figurine which was probably first produced in the 1880's.. The Royal Crown Derby version is very similar apart from the addition of a head scarf, the position of the tree stump and the fact that the walking cane is held in the opposite.
